Still Life and Still Alive!

Still life is the theme this week over at 52 Photos Project.  My post should be called "still alive" since I have been MIA since the end of September! Actually, that is quite the appropriate title after the milestone birthday I celebrated last week.  I turned 40 and I am still alive!

Now, I am truly not upset or depressed that I am officially a member of the 40s club. Rather, this whole process of turning 40 has magically unlocked tons of memories I had long forgotten (or blocked) from my past and the beauty is that because those events are now so long ago, I find I can look at my younger self with more tenderness and understanding.  The guilt and shame for past mistakes has finally lifted.  I can look back and see how many amazing people have influenced my life, how many blessings have resulted from my hard work and the graces given me by God.  What a birthday gift that has been.   (There is more to be said about this but I am still mining.)

I took this photo last year while on a foggy morning stroll with my toddler.  The colors are my favorites: pink, green and charcoal black.  The mood of this image is fitting today because we have had two solid days of rain and this morning is destined to be thickly coated by fog and morning dew.

Doesn't fall bring the loveliest combination of chilly and cozy days?  Yesterday I sent my mother off on the airplane back to North Dakota.  The gray day suited the loneliness of that moment.  She had been here for a ten day visit.  She had her own milestone birthday the day after mine.  (She turned 70 but shhhhh don't tell anyone!)  This visit explains why I have been away from the computer for the past two weeks.  We had too much to do!  Lunches at our favorite Greek restaurant, trips to the bookstore, multiple soccer practices, a major debate to watch and even Dancing With The Stars All-Stars!  Having her here is so easy and helpful and my boys soak up and shine in the light of her attention.  They miss her so much already.  We only get to see her about twice a year which is not nearly enough when your mom is truly a best friend.  Our next visit will be over Easter and that seems awfully far away.  Thank goodness for Face Time!

Well, this little update must come to an end as Wednesdays are Mass days for my boys at school and getting three young boys dressed in shirts and ties can leave me sweating by the time they head out the door!

Have a wonderful fall day wherever you are and whatever age you may be!

  2. Loved both your photo and your narrative! I remember 40 as being a remarkable year for very similar reasons to those you have stated here!...It seems that somehow we have earned the right, by the time we are 40, to be ourselves and to just "be'" ...to lose the words should and guilt from our vocabulary and, in the words of Maya Angelou "to be taken by the lapel and told: "I am with you kid. Let's go." Enjoy your year!

  8. Beautiful shot and lovely post. My daughter and I have birthdays close to each other as well, ours are four days apart, bracketing Christmas, it makes a wonderful season and connection for us both just as you and your Mum. I hope you both had wonderful days.

Locally Grown {stuffed green peppers recipe}

  Last weekend we took the whole family to a nearby produce stand.  We were craving something that tasted fresh from the garden and since I don't have my own garden, we found this place.     The fields were full of fall-colored flowered.  Can't wait for those cooler days to come.         But for now, we are reveling in the height of summer sunshine and produce.       It's easy to go overboard here and buy much more than you can use in the next few days.  I don't even like okra but they look so inviting in those cute blue crates.     These tomatoes inspired a caprese salad for lunch: tomato slices cut into quarters, hunks of fresh mozzarella, snipped basil leaves, salt, pepper and drizzles of olive oil and red wine vinegar.       These strawberries wound up being dunked in Silky Chocolate Fondue .       Every girl dreams of doing her shopping with one of these adorable woven baskets, doesn't she?       Even the boys had fun playing in the sand while I took m

Savoring Summer {Staying in the Season}

The desk full of binders, calendars, sports schedules and dreamy ideas is where I currently find myself, while my mind continues to stray back to the mountains and clouds of our trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota. We have been home for a week and I decided in future, I must come home better mentally prepared for the onslaught of emails and to-do items that pile up when we go away for two whole weeks. The fact that school resumes one week from today only intensifies the pressure to get it all done right away. Usually at this point in August I am eager for cooler, less humid days hinting at the beauty of spicy Autumn flavors. Not this year. I am so invigorated by my return to normal movement following the long recovery from knee surgery that I don't want these summery days to end. At least not until they officially end on September 23, 2014. This year feels like a do-over, the last one so consumed by injury, pain and slow, slow, slow recovery. My mind is bursti

Petals :: 52 Photos Project

Where I live the Bradford Pears have bloomed and blown and the Cherry Blossoms are in full blossom.  Even though that means our allergy season is now officially underway, I cannot help opening our windows every morning in hopes of hearing the birds singing to greet the day.  Springtime has conveniently coincided with my personal recovery process from knee surgery.  As I am slowly re-gaining mobility on crutches it seems an added encouragement that the weather is also improving and the trees are welcoming my return with their flowers. What a treat it would be to be able to put down my crutches in time for Easter Sunday and walk again on my own! (I am doubtful but one can hope.) Sharing with 52 Photos Project :: Petals
